(Their name contains a dual allusion: It refers to their resemblance to the Praxitelean sculpture Venus de’ Medici, housed in the Uffizi, and to the literal meaning of the Italian word medici, “medical.”) These figures are some of the most peculiar in La Specola’s vast collection-life-size wax nudes with sensuous, “living” faces (including human hair) and removable body cavities permitting the dissection and examination of each major organ system, also intricately sculpted in wax. He traveled to La Specola and reviewed some of its thousands of wax figures and tableaus, fossils, and preserved animals before selecting a series of female waxworks known as the Medici Venuses, created by 18th-century ceroplastic artist Clemente Susini. Also known as La Specola, the 18th-century wunderkammer traces its origins to Florence’s powerful Medici family and is located just across the Arno River from its more famous fine-arts counterpart, the Uffizi Gallery.Ĭonceiving the show as a means to introduce the Florentine institution to a wider public, it was Miuccia Prada who invited Cronenberg to collaborate. ![]() When, at last, the camera stops over the woman’s face again, she is revealed to be a wax mannequin, wearing an expression of inscrutable pleasure.Ĭronenberg’s transfixing film-titled Four Unloved Women, Adrift on a Purposeless Sea, Experience the Ecstasy of Dissection-is a central feature in the Fondazione Prada’s current “Cere Anatomiche” (anatomical waxes) exhibition, which showcases a collection of centuries-old wax sculptures from the Museo di Storia Naturale di Firenze, one of Europe’s oldest scientific museums. The camera trains upward along the woman’s ruptured torso, her innards laid bare from pelvis to throat. However, a tuft of pubic hair is suddenly obstructed by coils of intestine and a plexus of blood vessels and nerve endings. The camera begins to pan slowly along a pair of glistening feet and legs to the fork of her naked thighs-an erotic, if not voyeuristic, tally of the motionless woman’s most intimate anatomy. Another shot exposes her naked breast just beneath a pearl necklace and a long strand of braided hair. Then, a sliver of shimmering water appears near her outstretched hand, which rests upon a fringed pillow. The sounds of a rolling tide and cawing gulls surround her, and the tawny glow of her cheek suggests that she is sunning on the shore. She appears to be in repose, lolling on a bed of silk, but her eye is half-open and the pupil stares fixedly at a point just offscreen. And beg to be placed in a large room.” This collection, while shaking an elegant fist at “the wide hallways / of a great endowment”, is a useful dispatch from within such rooms.David Cronenberg’s new short film opens with a partial, anterior view of a woman’s face. Customs is her second collection, and in it she makes use of fashionable ellipses to create a poetics of understatement. The much garlanded Iranian-American poet was born in Istanbul in 1983. Customs by Solmaz Sharif ( Bloomsbury, £9.99) ![]() That said, there is one important caveat. It's really up to you to figure out what you want to do with this, and how it works for you. You could create a trips collection, where you save articles related to travel, and inside that, you could create specific collections of articles about different places you want to visit. That's a little obsessive, but if you're the kind of person who's collecting links about comic books, there's a fair chance that you're a little obsessive anyway. As mentioned above, links can be categorised into different collections, which can also be nested - so for example, you could have a Comics collection, where you keep bookmarks to articles about comic books, and inside that, you can have nested collections for Marvel and DC. It was also a little slow - after we uploaded the HTML file of our Pocket links, it took around 10 minutes to add almost 6,000 links. Importing requires you to first export an HTML file from each source, and then upload that to Raindrop.io, which is a little cumbersome. You can also import links from your browser's bookmarks, or from sites like Pocket. It's pretty great, if you've spent the time categorising and tagging your links properly. You can search for your images and videos, and you can search through specific collections if you want. It sorts your links by date by default, and you can search for tags, words in the title, words in the body, and so on. Speaking of which, the search onRaindrop.io is excellent. There's also a broken link finder that goes through your saved links, and if any link isn't working, removes that too.īut perhaps the most important feature is suggested tags - Raindrop.io looks at the page's topics, and uses that to suggest tags, automatically helping you populate saved links with metadata that makes searching and rediscovering them simpler. There are also a couple of interesting features such as the duplicate finder - if you've been saving links for a long time, then it's quite possible that you've made copies of the same link more than once, and getting rid of that becomes quite easy now. To categorise links, you can either add tags, or sort them into collections, which is just another way of saying folders. It's a very good looking app, which makes it easy to save all kinds of content, sort, and categorise it too. Typically, we've used a combination of a read-later service (Pocket) for individual articles, and RSS feeds ( Feedly) to track brings both these features together in a way and allows for a lot of control over how your links are being saved. Secondly, while it's great for saving long articles to read, if you just want to bookmark a collection of pictures that you will need to use for work later, then Pocket isn't the best way to do it. It doesn't handle videos too well, or very consistently, for one thing. ![]() Or you could use a read-later service such as Pocket to save the page, which is great, but there are some issues with Pocket. You could store it as a bookmark in your browser, at which point you have a bookmark hidden away that you are probably never going to open. Or you could just leave the tab open and hope that you come back to it when you have time - which is how you end up with 127 tabs open and your computer barely responding to anything. You could read it right away, but we rarely have the time to read everything that we come across. ![]() Think of it like this - what do you do when you come across a great article you haven't read already? Well, there are a few different options available. It can also serve as a replacement for Pocket or Instapaper as your read-it-later service. All this with an interface that’s a lot easier on the eyes than a basic list of bookmarks. Raindrop.io - which is available on the Web as a browser extension for Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Opera, and via apps for Android and iOS - lets you store your bookmarks and also makes it easier to organise them more efficiently. Secondly, almost every browser barely does the basics when it comes to bookmarks. ![]() For starters, even if you sync them across devices, your bookmarks are not accessible outside the browser. Most of us probably use the built-in bookmarks mangers on our browsers, but they are fairly limiting. Raindrop.io is a beautiful, powerful - but also slightly confusing - bookmark manager. ![]() A single push will plunge it into cataclysm. But each is beset by its own trials, and now both have cause to cross the threshold and send their armies into the Realm of Chaos. On the border between the worlds, two mighty kingdoms stand sentinel: the stern warriors of Kislev and the vast empire of Grand Cathay. Nurgle, the plague god Slaanesh, the lord of excess Tzeentch, the changer of ways and Khorne, the god of blood and slaughter. The four Ruinous Powers rule over this place, ever seeking to slip their bonds and engulf the world in a tide of daemonic corruption. It is a terrible place, incomprehensible to the mortal mind, whispering promises of power. Stay tuned this holiday season to see which one comes out on top.Far beyond this world and its petty wars there exists a dimension of pure, malevolent magic: The realm of Chaos. Objectively, the PS4 seems to have the technical edge on this one, but it remains to be seen if developers will be able to harness all of its power. The console war is intense in every generation, and only time will tell which one will win the battle. The Wii U, meanwhile, sits below those two prices at $349.99. The Xbox One will be released worldwide in the middle of those two dates, on Nov. The Playstation 4 hits shelves in North America on Nov. Additionally, access to online gameplay on the Wii U is free, while PS4 and Xbox One users need a paid subscription to either PS Plus or Xbox Live Gold. The PS4 and Xbox One will not support PS3 and Xbox 360 discs, leaving their online marketplaces as the only option for playing past games. One of these features is backwards compatibility, which allows users to play Wii discs on the system. In addition, the Wii U’s 8GB of storage doesn’t come close to the PS4 and Xbox One’s 500GB hard drives.Īlong with a cheaper price point, however, the Wii U offers several features its competitors do not. It’s difficult to classify the Wii U as “next-gen” since it has one-fourth the RAM of the upcoming PS4 and Xbox One, a little over one-fourth the processing power, and a little over half the graphical capability. Compare this to the Wii, which has just edged over 100 million lifetime sales in seven years, outselling both the PS3 and the Xbox 360, which have sold about 77 million units each. Where does the Wii U fit into all of this? Released in November of 2012, Nintendo’s Wii U has since sold a low 3.61 million units. Increased RAM allows games to run more smoothly, which in turn means less lag and frame rate drops. RAM (Random Access Memory) allows stored data to be accessed in any random order, while other forms of memory types, such as CDs and DVDs, can only access data in a predetermined order. The PS4 and Xbox One will both feature 8GB of RAM, compared to the PS3 and Xbox 360’s memory of 256 MB and 512 MB, respectively. Higher resolution character models will make people in the game look near photorealistic, with a greater level of detail added to their faces and clothes that would not be noticeable in this current generation.īoth consoles will feature memory storage systems that are up to 16 times more powerful than those of their predecessors. More powerful GPUs allow games to render faster and at higher resolutions, and it will be noticeable in things such as more realistic water ripples, reflections, and lighting effects. The Xbox One will also feature an AMD Radeon GPU however, it will only operate at 1.31 TeraFLOPS. The PS4 will run on an AMD Radeon Graphics Core, with a peak throughput of 1.84 TeraFLOPS (FLOPS are the standard measure of computer performance) per second, compared to the PS3’s peak of 1.80 TeraFLOPS per second. The GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) for each console will be greatly improved as well. This in turn means more lively, populated game environments. Since the CPU computes all of a game’s motion, enemy AI, and physics, this more powerful processor will allow for more NPCs (Non-Player Characters) to be on-screen at a given time. Sony’s PS4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One will both feature 8-core CPUs (Central Processing Units), an upgrade from the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360’s 7-core and 3-core processors, respectively. This new generation brings much to the table, with processing power and memory storage that beats out their predecessors as much as 16 times over. ![]() Fans and critics have been debating for months: which console will win in this upcoming generation? This is the eighth cycle, and it’s shaping up to be a brutal one. These two consoles will join Nintendo’s Wii U as what will most likely be the biggest products of this holiday season, and with every new generation of consoles comes the retail war. Sony and Microsoft will each release their highly anticipated consoles, the Playstation 4 and the Xbox One, in November. The next generation of gaming consoles is fast approaching. |
